Archive raiding again - this time from a road trip soon after I moved to Melbourne, out in the country-side...somewhere...

The cleverly observant amongst you will notice from the EXIF data that this was actually taken in the morning rather, as the name suggests, late. Too late, I had already saved the file with that filename.

THE PHOTO:
Sadly, during the two weeks I spent in the north China city of Dalian, the weather was less than ideal for outdoor photography, with it being foggy/smoggy or cloudy almost the whole time.

On one of the few occasions when I got out with the camera, I happened to take this shot looking back along the famed Binhai Road.

POST PROCESSING:
3 exposure HDR composite - merged and tone-mapped in Photomatix. Photoshop treatments include (but not limited to) shadow/highlight, levels/curves, dodge/burn, color balance, USM.

A good indication of what I had to work with can be seen from the middle of the three exposures:

The last shot, and a recent revisit of my Flickr account reminded me that I hadn't posted another water scene shot from my last trip to Vietnam at the end of last year.

This was shot from a moving train along the famous coastal railway north of Da Nang. (Note: location plot is estimated)

On of my first shots from my recent trip to China. This one taken from the Qi'Ao Bridge just out of Zhuhai (a very picturesque part of southern China) - out to sea and into the sun.

Lenin Park, including the large lake in the center, was once Hanoi's dumping ground for household waste. Originally called Seven-Hectare Lake, the area lacked any appeal until after the French were defeated. Ho Chi Minh adorned the grounds around the lake with gardens, paths, statues and even an area for theatrical performance. The newly named Reunification Park became, and still is, one of the most beautiful parks in Hanoi. It was later renamed Lenin Park when the then Soviet Union befriended Vietnam during the American War.

POST PROCESSING:
I went for a specific look and feel for this shot, as both monochrome (black and white), nor color did it any justice. I aimed for a tone that reminded me of Asian landscape prints - almost duo-tone in nature. This was done with various 55mm Filters in Photoshop, some cloning, sharpen, shadow/highlight, levels and curves.

THE PHOTO:
A solitary military guard in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi in front of the imposing Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This square, where Ho Chi Minh made his independence speech in 1945. This grassy checker-board expanse is a "no-go" zone for curious walkers, and it was amusing watching the guards shoo the unknowing tourists off it.

THE PHOTO:
Heading up the coast of Vietnam from Ho Chi Minh (Siagon) towards Hanoi, we stopped in Da Nang - the coastal vity mid way along the length of the country.

This is a shot from the main beach looking towards the Ba Na mountains.

POST PROCESSING:
Split treatment on the sky for contrast - normal levels/curves etc.

THE PHOTO:
Of the last 3 trips I have taken to Asia, one of the more ubiquitous scenes you can guarantee when looking out of a train window is a worker tending a rice-paddy. With Vietnam now one of the more productive "bread-baskets" (rice-baskets) of south-east Asia, this scene is now a standard.

POST PROCESSING:
Rotate, Sharpen, Levels (mask), Curves (mask), Crop.

P.S. The image is intentionally "dark".

Note: The map reference is completely incorrect because I have no idea where I was when I took this shot.

Taken from the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia, looking across the famous lily pond, and back to the tourist balloon where the last shot was taken from.

Not a bad little money-spinner that operation - up and down again every 15 minutes on a fixed winch. Great views though.

Elevated view over the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia. High enough to see the curvature of the earth, the moat and the complex itself. A following shot will explain (visually) how this shot was achieved.
